What are Invisalign aligners made of?
Invisalign aligners are made of smooth, clear plastic. They are custom-designed using specialized computer imaging technology to fit perfectly over your teeth in order to provide you with a treatment that is both comfortable and effective.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign works using a series of clear aligners. Each set of aligners makes small changes to the alignment of your teeth. As you switch to new aligners every two weeks, your teeth with gradually be moved into their correct positions.
How long does Invisalign treatment take to complete?
The total length of your treatment depends on the severity of your case and how much tooth movement is required. Treatment can take anywhere from six months to two years. On average, most Invisalign treatments are completed in about one year.
How often do I need to wear the aligners?
The more frequently you wear your aligners, the more quickly your treatment will progress. We recommend that you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours each day, and only remove them to eat, drink, clean your aligners and brush and floss your teeth.
Will my treatment be painful?
In general, Invisalign is very comfortable, and most patients to not experience pain or discomfort. If discomfort is present, it is usually minimal and only occurs on the first day of changing into a new aligner set.
Will Invisalign affect my speech?
It is unlikely that Invisalign will affect the way you speak. Some patients feel or hear a small whistle during the first few days of treatment, but this disappears after you adjust to the aligners.
Are there any food restrictions?
No. Because your aligners are removable, you can eat anything that you want. Just remember to remove your aligners before eating and to brush your teeth afterward.
Can I drink while wearing my aligners?
Absolutely! However, we recommend that you remove your aligners to drink sugary drinks, and that you rinse your mouth and aligners shortly after drinking. This will prevent sugars from being trapped on the teeth and aligners and contributing to tooth decay or other problems.
How often should I visit studioSMILE Orthodontics during treatment?
If you are receiving an Invisalign treatment, we recommend that you visit Dr. Kelly Tabacchi every 8-12 weeks. This allows us to monitor your progress and make any needed adjustments to ensure that your treatment stays on-schedule.
How do I keep my aligners clean?
You can clean your aligners by rinsing and brushing them under lukewarm water. Do not put your aligners in the dishwasher or use extremely hot water to clean them.
Will I have to use a retainer following treatment?
Yes. All patients who receive orthodontic treatment need to wear a retainer following the completion of their treatment. Retainers prevent your teeth from shifting back into their previous positions. Your retainer will be custom-made to ensure the best retention results possible in both the short- and long-term.
Is it normal for my teeth to feel loose during treatment?
Yes. When your teeth move, your supporting bone needs to reform around the tooth. This creates a loose feeling in your mouth. This feeling will go away after you complete treatment and move into the retention phase.
Can I receive Invisalign if I have veneers or bridgework?
Of course! Or orthodontist will evaluate your mouth and develop a treatment plan which takes into account your existing bridgework or veneers. She can also determine the best orthodontic treatment plan if you need to receive a bridge or veneers after your orthodontic treatment.
Can my aligners become stained?
Yes. There are many things which may stain your aligners, including smoking and other tobacco usage, red wine, pasta sauce, blueberries, coffee and soda.
